Journal 05: Peer Dialogue 2

Sarah blogged about a very important issue in her course reflection 2. She stated that “I think the only way in which we can solve these problems is by working together to solve the problems this world is facing and especially the environmental crisis.  Most importantly it will take the efforts of the masses and successful intervention and innovation will require the participation of all”. I feel that it is very important to take care of our planet.  People can try to deny global warming all they want, but they cannot argue against the devastations brought on by humans such as the BP oil spill that recently happened. These types of situations are the fault of man and only we can work together to prevent future catastrophes from occurring. The design/redesign of products is in my opinion essential in our future worldwide.

Mike B. gave a description of the 5 steps of design in his blog. “The basic overview of the design process can be broken down into five steps: 1. Define the problem, 2. Research the problem, 3. Design cycle, 4. Production, 5. Evaluation.” I especially liked how Mike explained the evaluation process. It is important to know if the product solves the product that it was intended to solve. Besides that point, I feel that it is important to know if the product can be used successfully to do other things that it was not designed for.

Mike F. talks about a useful invention in his blog. “One of the inventions that most stuck me was the water bottle that could filter even the dirtiest water, and the fact that it was affordable and could change the lives of so many people from those in 3rd world countries”. With this statement, I can understand how designing new products can raise the quality of living not necessarily in America, but in other places where it is needed like third world countries as Mike mentioned. I feel that designs should be created that everyone can use and that those are the most important designs.
