CR02

We saw the video “The Deep Dive” in which we saw a new approach that IDEO took with things that were being designed. “Fail often so that we can succeed sooner” is the quote from the movie and it makes sense because success has to be the result of failed attempts.

One of the things that I really remember was the video about the wheel chair type machine that was supposed to be innovative for people who weren’t able to walk. It was able to stand on two wheels to allow easy access to higher items, and the wheels made it really easy to go on different terrain like sand. This was supposed to be such a great invention but it was a dead project because it was too much money to make and insurance companies did not want to support it.

The scavenger hunt also took place and was an easy assignment that gave me extra time to do nothing last Monday.

Last Wednesday’s class I missed, and I’ve been reading that many people enjoyed that class, so I wish that I had made it to class that day. Erica L said that “The last lecture was probably my favorite so far. We discussed creating environmentally friendly products. I really liked all the videos that we watched in class. My favorite was probably the video on the new Life Saver Bottle.”( http://design200spring.blogspot.com/)

Hunting Down Design: A03

 Clue 1:
The Barcelona chair was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The Barcelona chair was said to be derived from his interpretation of an Egyptian royal folding chair and a Roman folding footstool, and was intended to be thrones for the visiting royals.

 Clue 2:
The Rocking chair was created by Charles and Ray Eams. On fact is that the brothers’ got the idea from an experiment with new methods of bending plywood in the work they did for the navy wartime effort. The magazine is Urbanistica.
 Clue 3:
Peter Wisenman designed the Wexner Center, his first public building designed. An interesting fact is that parts of the movie Little man Tate with Jodi Foster was filmed there. Also, the white metal girders represent the street layout of OSU and the City of Columbus.
 Clue 4:
Philip Johnson built two buildings on campus, one of which is the Math Tower.  One architectural detail that my group found interesting was the doorway which does not have the arch design that the rest of the building has.
Clue 5:
Thompson Library has been renovated three times. Controversy involved a $109-million renovation that included the removal of the old stack tower in favor of glass.

For the hunting down design assignment, I worked together with Mike & Mike. That is just so fun to say. We stayed in class the first few minutes and briefly looked over the clues and found answers to them. After we found the answers, we went to the five destinations in order to get the pictures.

Journal 03

I like how Mike F gives a timeline of Apple products and how things change from model to model or even generation. He says more or less that "Ives and Apple are a source of inspiration because of their attention to detail when it comes to their products, from the quality of the materials to the (almost) seamless interaction of all of the components, including the operating system which sets them apart from other companies". I agree with this because I have always wanted an ipod even when I had a perfectly fine mp3 player, which was NOT an ipod. Now that I have an ipod nano, I want an ipod touch, so the cycle doesn't end.

Mike B was cleaver in his blog title non-juggler which is what we talked about on the first day of class. I like some of the Colors magazines by Tibor Kalma. After reading his quote "One of the most fascinating things about Tibor Kalman was, never having any training in design, he had a natural gift for understanding visual communications. Some of his most interesting works are uncluttered, usually heavily font driven pieces, which were short and to the point." I can understand why he chose to research him. Plus we have another mac; "And I'm a Mac not a PC".

I like how Sarah has the two pictures from her visit to Bolivia. I like to travel and I think we all should travel to different places and just broaden ourselves and be open to different cultures. I also like Sarah's reason for taking this class; "The reasoning behind this decision was based on the fact that I love art and specifically art involving digital media." Its a reason simular to my own, although I wouldn't say I'm that great when it comes to actually making art. I don't know if she is Mac or PC but its okay.

RR01

Instead of giving a summary of each chapter, I thought it would be easier to expand on things that I found interesting within the readings. One such example of this is in chapter three when the book talks about culture and social groups and how that has an influence on community, value and organization. The book states that design encompasses everyday life and has influence on peoples' lives. It was the same thing that was discussed during lecture about how things have to be designed to appeal to wants and they have to adapt to changes that are defined by society. different things have to be taken into account such as national or international appeal for example. Chapter 4 goes into more detail about how this is accomplished. things are sometimes created with a specific purpose in mind but can be used in different ways. An example of that is the IPad which is a tablet that was at first a questionable product more recently 'cloned' by many companies to compete with Apple. Chapter 6 gets into uses of space such as landscaping and interior space design. The book gives many examples of Japanese customs which gives a comparison to our society. I would not think that the set up of a space would have much of any effect on even the smallest things but everyone will react to a space in different way, so designers have to keep that in mind when creating spaces. An example could be to use communication in design from chapter 5 to change the way work areas are formed to make it easier to get things accomplished. One idea was in class when we discussed Cup o Joe where people use the space for meetings and work space because it is different from the normal office. These types of ideas can benefit people in many different situations. The experience a person has is a major part of how effective design is.

Course Reflection 1

On the first day, we joined other people who had the same face card value as our own card. I was a King, and I'm interested to see what we will have partners for.

Day two was the lecture about the History of designs. We talked about influential people and products that have shaped the foundation of design. We talked about how things need to be functional. The Bauhaus is a building that several of our buildings on campus get their designs from. We talked about several chairs, and I liked how we actually saw the chairs on the third day when we went to the Architecture library.

The third day of class was when we took a trip to the Fine Arts library and the Architecture Library. I'm not really into buildings too much, so I know I will use the Fine Arts library to do my research for the designers. I did like to see the different chair designs inside Knowlton hall and the Architecture library. It gives to lecture about the chairs so much more meaning.

The fourth class was the breakdown of all the different design categories. I guess I learned most from the lack of knowledge about everything that designers made, or contribute to. I appreciated the general overview of the lecture because it helped me to better distinguish between the design disciplines.

10 patterns

This first pattern was found inside Knowlton Hall. I found this design interesting because the different shapes have a 3-D projection based on the color; the black sticks out the most and the yellow sticks out the least.
This image is of the glass design from inside Knowlton. I just found the over all design of the glass structure to be unique from the other building that are around campus.

These rocks are from outside Caldwell and I chose these because they are a mix of man made because of the layout, but also nature because they are rocks.
This is from outside of the Wexner Center; they were interesting to be because of the shape that they are and I wondered why they were actually designed that way.

This is from a wall on the inside of the Wexner Center, and it was different because it is made from a ribbon like material and the pink and blue are out more than the yellow from the wall, so it gives it a 3-D look from far away.

These were leaves on the side of Weigel Hall and it was really gust to have an all natural design more than anything else.

This gravel was outside of the Wexner Center and I'm not to sure what it is or how it came to the form, but it was interesting because of its mystery.

This was just a pattern from a Starbucks cup, and it relates to the discussions about logos and how important to make appealing products so that people will want to buy it.

These curtains are from my dorm room, and they may be ugly but they are flame resistant so they do have another purpose besides just being curtains.
This design is from outside of Arps Hall. I chose it because it is a design, not a pattern but it is still relevant to the class in other ways so as we move forward, I can look to see how this ties in to our later discussions in class.

Introduction

I am form Cleveland, Ohio, which seemed to be the majority of our class on the first day. I am a person who can get along well with other people, but I am not much of a conversationalist. I am a huge chocolate person; that's about 4 days a week on average that I consume something chocolate. I am also really big on cartoons and anime and anything related to those. I am also an animal person, but not all animals.

I have always been interested in graphic design, so I decided to take this class because I am changing my major, and I just wanted to see how interested I would be once the class concluded. I don't have any set class expectations, I just want to get a general understanding of design. I am mainly hoping that this will be an interesting class that will help me decide if a road down design will be in my future.
